Leading New York City Law Firm Meets Growing Printing Demands with Fast, Reliable and Cost Effective

BACKGROUND: In 2007, a large New York City law firm gave 600 attorneys, paralegals and other staff members the ability to print directly to the firm’s 50 satellite printers located throughout the 13-floor office building. Users immediately began taking advantage of the new capabilities and started printing 300 and 400 page files to the copiers which created significant delays. Printing a 400 page document for example, could take up to 45 minutes to begin printing.
Handling such a large printing and copying volume, the machines were frequently down, jammed or needed paper and toner. For this fast-paced office, any amount of down time meant that attorneys were wasting valuable time running between floors to other printers and not billing clients. In order to keep the machines up and running at all times, the firm had an internal copier support staff of four people to service the devices. Even with an experienced staff, the firm was still placing at least three service calls per month to the manufacturer.
As printing demands and costs increased, the law firm needed a more reliable and cost effective printing solution. The firm knew that just adding more copiers was not the solution. It needed
hardware that was faster, easy to use, could handle bigger print jobs, and required less
maintenance. Any new products purchased needed to fit within the firm’s green initiatives and provide a high level of security as well.
SOLUTION: Working with the local Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc.
(Konica Minolta) representative, the law firm replaced a handful of the satellite printers in 2009 with bizhub PRO 950 production print systems and quickly witnessed the Konica Minolta advantage. The bizhub PRO 950’s were able to handle a month’s worth of printing in just two weeks without delay. They performed so well that users from other floors were sending print jobs to the digital presses for increased productivity. Users were impressed with the speed at which the new Konica Minolta systems printed the large print jobs and the firm’s printer
support staff realized less maintenance needs and less downtime.
As leases on the former hardware expired, the firm replaced older HP and Lexmark laser printers with the bizhub PRO’s which can run all day without the need for more paper
and have significantly less paper jams. With the new digital print systems in place, print
impressions on each machine grew by 35 to 40 percent equaling 90,000 to 120,000
impressions per month.
