Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale, P.C. Deploys Relativity Firm Wide

St. Louis-based law firm selects e-discovery platform for its customizable workflow capabilities, scalability, and ease of use

Press Release – Chicago, IL – January 31, 2011 – kCura today announced that Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale, P.C. has implemented Relativity for e-discovery document review. Through customizable workflows and an easy-to-understand user interface, Relativity has greatly accelerated the review process for Greensfelder’s case teams.

“I’ve never seen a piece of software so quickly and easily search such a large database,” said Dana Kujawa, litigation support manager at Greensfelder. “We have a case containing more than one million records in our system, but with Relativity, it feels like there are only one hundred records. The review platform makes our litigation support team more valuable to the firm.”

Relativity provides Greensfelder with the following benefits:

  • Customizable Workflows:  Relativity enables case managers to set up customized workflows for faster review. By simplifying Relativity’s user interface and providing case teams with only the options they need, Greensfelder has greatly reduced their time spent reviewing documents. For example, one of the law firm’s cases required more than 30,000 documents to be produced in a limited time frame. With Relativity, eight of Greensfelder’s attorneys were able to complete this review in less than three days.

  • Scalability:  Relativity gives users the scalability to handle the industry’s most complex e-discovery projects.  With the ability to expand capacity quickly, Relativity has allowed Greensfelder to take million-document cases and place them in a centralized location for analysis, review, and production.

  • Ease of Use:  Relativity’s native review features, advanced search capabilities, and streamlined user interface contribute to the platform’s ease-of-use. With minimal training, Greensfelder’s attorneys are able to quickly navigate from document to document in order to make decisions during review.

“It is clear that Greensfelder’s first priority is to fully understand their clients’ legal issues and business goals,” said Andrew Sieja, president and CEO of kCura. “It’s fantastic to see the firm already experiencing success with Relativity, and we look forward to working with them as they continue to provide excellent litigation support solutions to their clients.

Law Firms Improve Staff Efficiency & Collaberation w/ Riverbed WAN Optimization #LTNY #LegalIT

Riverbed to Showcase Award-Winning IT Performance Solutions at LegalTech 2011

Law Firms Improve Staff Efficiency and Collaboration, While Lowering IT Costs with Riverbed WAN Optimization Solutions

Riverbed Technology, the IT performance company, today announced its participation at LegalTech New York 2011, taking place today through February 2 at the Hilton New York Hotel in New York City.  LegalTech attendees can visit the Riverbed booth #408 to learn how the company’s wide area network (WAN) optimization and network and application visibility solutions enable acceleration of applications and data for branch offices, data centers and mobile workers, as well as virtualized, private and public cloud environments.  The company will feature its recently announced cloud-based solutions – Virtual Steelhead™, Riverbed Cloud Steelhead™ and Riverbed Whitewater® – describing how these are being leveraged to improve worker efficiency and collaboration, while lowering costs.

As law firms move towards cloud-based IT infrastructures to further reduce costs and increase efficiencies, only Riverbed can help unleash the power of cloud-based computing by accelerating the process of migrating data and applications to the cloud and speeding up access to that data and those applications from anywhere. Riverbed is also the only vendor with an end-to-end IT performance solution that allows customers to understand application performance over networks, optimize the performance of those applications and then intelligently consolidate their IT into private or public clouds.

Today, more than 8,700 enterprises worldwide depend on Riverbed to understand, optimize and consolidate their IT infrastructure. The breadth of the Riverbed product family provides enterprise-wide network and application visibility, unmatched performance for large-scale data center-to-data center replication, “local” performance for remote and mobile workers, and acceleration for private and public cloud environments.

With deployments at many of the world’s top globally distributed law firms, Riverbed has achieved a high degree of success in enabling attorneys to more easily collaborate across offices and from remote locations. In addition to speeding file transfers from minutes to mere seconds, Riverbed solutions have helped law firms consolidate and optimize dispersed network infrastructures and maximize WAN utilization, while reducing unnecessary servers. This enables legal workers to eliminate long downloads, reduce non-billable tasks and improve client response times, while also reducing bandwidth expenses.”

Constangy, Brooks & Smith, LLP, a a national Labor and Employment law firm with more than 125 lawyers spread across 22 offices, deployed Riverbed WAN optimization to improve the efficiency of their IT infrastructure across their entire enterprise with the adoption of a private cloud computing strategy. After installing Riverbed Steelhead appliances with the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP) – a Steelhead appliance that allows enterprises the ability to run up to five additional services and applications virtually in a protected partition - in each office, the firm was able to consolidate and virtualize remote servers, while eliminating the expense and difficulty of remotely managing hardware and software. Significant cost savings were achieved in both capital outlay for a planned server replacement and in monthly operating expenditures for the servers and network.

“Riverbed was the perfect fit to enable us to move to a centralized, private-cloud model for all IT services,” said David Grow, Director of Information Technology at Constangy, Brooks & Smith.  “We were able to leverage better utilization from our WAN without having to increase WAN costs.  In addition, the RSP allowed us to replace all of our 5U mid-range servers with 1U virtualized appliances, move all of the data to our Atlanta headquarters and still get better performance.”

In November 2010, Riverbed introduced three new products to address the growing demands of the global enterprise.

  • Virtual Steelhead™ enables customers to deploy Riverbed WAN optimization solutions in a broader range of environments that may have specialized requirements, such as ruggedized environments or environments with space limitations, as well as data centers that have been heavily virtualized.

  • Riverbed Cloud Steelhead™ instances accelerate the process of migrating data and applications to the public cloud, and accelerate access to that data and those applications from anywhere.

  • The Riverbed Whitewater™ appliance provides organizations with a fast, secure and cost-efficient method to seamlessly integrate cloud storage into their existing backup infrastructure and disaster recovery (DR) strategies.

LegalTech NY: A panel of Judges weighs in on embracing technology

Day one of LegalTech New York continues...

The plenary general session offered an interesting perspective of technology in the legal industry by a panel of judges. The session titled, “Why the Legal Industry Needs to Change and Embrace Technology,” was moderated by Joseph FitzGerald of Symantec Corporation and featured Hon. Dennis M. Sweeney, Hon. David J. Waxse, and Hon. Ron Hedges.

The judges discussed such issues as evolving industry standards and what one referred to as the “consumerization” of IT – where employees (and their employers) seek to consolidate personal and work-related applications, devices, etc. and the ramifications of that.

Judge Waxse discussed the need to use technology in the context of having “just, speedy and inexpensive” trials, reminding the audiences that case issues should drive the use of technology which means that counsel must agree at the onset of exactly what those issues ultimately are.

Judge Sweeney talked about the impact of social media on trials, sharing some interesting examples of jurors being disqualified mid-trial as a result of their activities on social networking outlets including Facebook and Twitter. His Honor advised that lawyers need to catch up to modern day juries in the ways of technology – a good suggestion as it will help them better serve their clients in the long run.

EMS integrates with Tandberg to coordinated video conference management. #LTNY #LegalIT

When a law firm has clients around the world or a second office on the other side of town, it can make a lot of sense to hold video conferences rather than spend the time and money it takes to meet in person.

But video conferencing still takes coordination and presents a different set of challenges – equipment availability and reservations, not to mention knowing what time it is in Australia or wherever your conference attendees may be.

EMS and TMS streamline the video conference process.

LegalTech Day 1 Keynote Session Highlights Taking Time to Understand Priorities

LegalTech New York 2011 kicked off this morning with a keynote address sponsored by KPMG and Content Analyst. The session, titled, “Legal vs. IT: Turn the Battle into a Solution to Meet Compliance,” was delivered by Gabriel Buigas, Deputy General Counsel at Hewlett-Packard Company. Key highlights from this morning's keynote session include:

  • Many companies struggle with a disconnect between IT and legal departments, as each has different priorities along with different scorecards and metrics. IT departments seek to improve information management and system performance, along with shifting their spend from maintenance to innovation. Legal departments are focused on compliance and risk management.

  • Mr. Buigas shared some real-world examples of HP’s legal and IT departments working together on successful projects: the implementation of an electronic records management system, establishment of a regulatory compliance process, and updating/consolidating legal IT applications. Critical success factors in each included identifying shared goals, addressing issues that arose before they became escalated, and understanding one another’s challenges and providing assistance to overcome those. He also discussed the importance of establishing project management teams, creating detailed business requirements, and the often over-looked step of training and communication.

  • The overriding message: IT and legal departments must take the time to understand one another’s priorities, which will help identify mutual interests and foster a collaborative working environment for almost any project.
